ecoENERGY Efficiency for Buildings

Natural Resources Canada's ecoENERGY Efficiency for Buildings program provides tools and information to improve the energy performance of new and existing commercial and institutional buildings, including federally owned and operated buildings – supporting Canada’s commitment to clean energy and energy efficiency.

Energy Efficiency in New buildings

Whether in the concept/design, construction or occupancy phases, opportunities exist to improve a new building’s energy efficiency.

Canada’s new National Energy Code for Buildings

The National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) 2011 establishes an overall 25% improvement in energy efficiency over the previous Code and indicates the minimum requirements for energy efficiency in new buildings. For the first time ever, the new code places Canada on a comparable footing with countries that lead the world in energy efficient building construction.

From 2011 to 2016 NRCan and other government stakeholders and key industry representatives will continue to play a leadership role by supporting the adoption of the 2011 Code and will coordinate compliance and training initiatives.

In the fall of 2011, information will be made available to show how implementing the Code can improve a building’s energy performance.

Energy Efficiency in Existing buildings

Through investments in energy efficiency, NRCan’s new and updated service offerings can help lower costs and improve the performance of existing buildings – leading to savings of 20 percent or more.

New National Energy Benchmarking Tool for Canada

NRCan is leading the development of a national building energy benchmarking tool based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Portfolio Manager energy benchmarking tool. The tool will enable building owners and facility managers to compare their building’s energy performance.  Benchmarking also supports the business case for taking action as it raises the visibility and expectations of a building’s energy performance.

The Canadian version will be available on a progressive basis, starting in 2013 with office buildings and schools. Other building types will be added over time.

Energy Efficiency in Federal buildings

Since 1991, the Federal Buildings Initiative has led by example by facilitating the implementation of energy efficiency retrofit projects in federally owned or managed buildings with special emphasis on energy performance contracting as a project financing tool.
